Health authorities have long lusted after a Viagra-like drug was found in a package at the back of a Mexico pharmacy.
The package, which was opened by Pfizer’s drugmaker last month, contained two pills, labeled “Viagra for Erectile Dysfunction” and “Sildenafil for Erectile Dysfunction.”
A spokesman for Mexico’s top drug enforcement agency, the Guardia Civil, confirmed Monday that the package had been opened. He declined to say how many pills the person inside opened.
Pfizer has since taken a break from production of Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Revatio.
But the pills have proved less potent, the company said.
Pfizer said it was working with U. S. and European regulators to stop the sale.
“We’re continuing to work with regulatory agencies and law enforcement partners to stop the distribution of this potentially dangerous drug,” Pfizer’s management group Pfizer P. A. said in a statement. “It’s too early to say how many pills will be found at the back of the Mexican pharmacy. But the potential harm to the public and to the animals depends on how much is found in the package.”
Pfizer’s spokesman declined to comment.
The pills, which are produced by Bayer AG, are sold under the brand name Revatio and are only available to people with a prescription from a U. physician.
The little blue pill is designed to treat erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis.
